Pentax Camera Lenses

Pentax SLR cameras use APS-C sensors and most lenses are designed to work with this type of camera. Pentax's lens selection includes compact prime lenses, macro lenses, zoom lenses, wide angle lenses and standard lenses.

Pentax K-mount lenses are designed for Pentax K-mount digital SLR cameras. There is also the Q-mount mirrorless and the medium format 645 lenses, which are TTL (through-the-lens) autofocus and can be used for wide-angle landscapes and fixed prime portraits. There is also a telephoto lens for taking sport and wildlife photos. The medium format lenses feature a tiltable rear screen.

Types of Pentax camera lens

The smc Pentax-DA and HD Pentax-DA lenses, designed to be used with APS-C sensor digital cameras feature Quick Shift focusing enabling users to fine tune the focus manually without having to set the focus selector to MF. The DA L lenses are lightweight with a bayonet mount but they don't have the Quick Shift feature but the DA does and it is weather sealed. The FA range of lenses are optimised for digital sensors but also work on 34mm film cameras, and allow some modern cameras to automatically set the shutter speed, aperture, or both.

There are three Pentax-FA J zoom lenses with an autofocus feature which are suitable for digital sensor and full-frame format cameras. The aperture can be set automatically but there is no aperture ring so cannot be used on cameras that have a mandatory aperture ring.

The Pentax-M lens is smaller than the K lenses with manual aperture but they don't have an 'A' setting on the aperture ring. They are suitable for digital sensor and full frame format cameras, and the camera is able to set the shutter speed automatically. The majority of K and M lenses feature an automatic diaphragm.

Some Pentax lenses have a built-in supersonic motor for automatic focusing that is quiet and quick, as well as two extra-low dispersion (ED) optical elements which minimises chromatic aberration and delivers high-resolution photographs.

Pentax lenses are sturdy in their construction and have been designed for use in many locations and all weather. Their dustproof, weather resistant bodies and lenses are effective in keeping out moisture, dust and water. They are interchangeable with a range of cameras with an optimised design for APS-C image sensors. They also feature Pentax's shake reduction (SR) mechanism that will minimise camera shake, including when using a telephoto lens. Their entry-level models have a pentaprism viewfinder instead of a pentamirror for a brighter, larger image view.
